Landowner Forest Climate and Action Scorecards

A series of booklets designed to help private landowners consider climate change in the context of their woods. The booklets are an effective tool when working with consulting foresters.

The USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub and Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS) have partnered with regional partners to develop state-specific booklets that can help landowners effectively talk with consulting foresters about their property goals, potential climate-related risks, and climate-informed actions they would like to take in line with their vision for the land.

Each booklet contains four separate "Scorecards" to help landowners think about forests at a property level, focused on topics such as forest diversity, structure, regeneration, and other factors. A list of climate-informed actions is included to support landowners looking for solutions that address their forest's greatest risks. Several state-specific booklets are now available for NY (and the Northeast), Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan.

Acknowledgments

The booklets were originally created by partners from the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science, American Forest Foundation, Cornell Cooperative Extension, New England Forestry Foundation, and The Nature Conservancy who developed the original concept and the layout.
